The Talk

Mom always said she’d support us

if any of us were gay,

no questions asked.

When I told her I was asexual

there were questions.

Well, how could I know

since I didn’t date?

Like that wasn’t an answer in itself.

Somehow the conversation ended with me

agreeing to join some dating sites that

summer, something we never talked about

back when we thought I was straight.

I never signed up.

The next time I told her she was silent.

Years later I showed her the episode of

Supernatural with the siren that appears

as something you most desire. The next day

she said that my siren would be a dog.

Sometimes acceptance comes slowly.
